From January 1st to March 15th, you can get in on some of the best ice fishing Ontario has to offer, without freezing your butt off or missing the big game.
Picture this: You're cozied up in a top-notch ice hut, lines dropped through pre-drilled holes, waiting for that telltale tug. But instead of shivering and watching your breath freeze, you're kicking back on a comfy seat, maybe grilling up some snacks on the BBQ, or streaming the latest Netflix hit on the smart TV. Yeah, you heard that right - we've got Wi-Fi out here on the ice. And when the fish aren't biting? No worries. Flip on the fish camera and spy on what's swimming below. It's like having your own personal aquarium, minus the weekly cleaning.
Our huts are built for comfort, but they're also set up for serious fishing. We're talking four-person capacity, so bring your buddies or the family. Mike, our ice fishing guru, doesn't just drop you off and wave goodbye. He's out there drilling extra holes, making sure you've got the best shot at hooking into some monsters. We're targeting the trifecta of ice fishing glory: Walleye, Northern Pike, and Yellow Perch. Each hut comes equipped with the basics, but if you're particular about your gear, feel free to bring your own rods and tackle. Just don't forget your lucky lures!
Look, ice fishing isn't everyone's cup of tea. It takes a special kind of crazy to willingly sit on a frozen lake for hours. But for those of us who've caught the bug, there's nothing like it. The quiet of a snow-covered lake, broken only by the occasional whir of an auger or the shouts of triumph when someone lands a lunker. And with our setup, you get all that winter wonderland magic without the frostbite. It's the perfect mix of rugged outdoor adventure and creature comforts.
Walleye: These golden-eyed beauties are the crown jewel of ice fishing on Sparrow Lake. They're crafty, they fight hard, and they taste even better. Winter walleye tend to hunker down in deeper water, so we'll set you up over some prime spots. The best action usually happens during low light periods, so early morning or late afternoon is prime time. When you feel that distinctive tap-tap-tap, set the hook hard and hang on!
Northern Pike: If you're after a real bruiser, pike are your target. These toothy predators can grow to impressive sizes in Sparrow Lake, and they don't slow down much in winter. They're ambush hunters, so working a lure near weed edges or drop-offs can produce explosive strikes. Just remember to bring some heavy leaders - pike have been known to slice through light line like it's dental floss.
Yellow Perch: Don't let their size fool you - what perch lack in heft, they make up for in numbers and taste. These little striped dynamos often school up in winter, so when you find them, it can be non-stop action. They're perfect for introducing kids to ice fishing, and there's nothing quite like a fresh perch fry on a cold day. Tip a small jig with a minnow or waxworm, and you're in business.

Yellow Perch are scrappy little fighters that school up in Sparrow Lake. Most run 7-10 inches, perfect for a fish fry. You'll find them around weed beds, docks, and other structure in 5-20 feet of water. They bite year-round but really turn on in spring and fall. Perch are a blast on ultralight tackle and taste fantastic. Kids love catching them too. To get into a hot school, drop a small jig tipped with a piece of worm right on the bottom and slowly work it up. When you find one, there's usually more nearby. Keep moving until you locate an active school.
Northern Pike are the ambush predators of Sparrow Lake. These long, toothy fish can grow up to 4 feet, but most catches are around 2 feet and 5-10 pounds. Look for pike in weedy shallows and near drop-offs, especially in spring and fall when they're most active. They'll hit just about anything - spoons, spinners, or live bait. Pike put up a mean fight and taste great when prepared right. For the best shot at a big one, try slow-trolling a large soft plastic swimbait along weed edges early in the morning. Just watch those teeth when you're unhooking them!
Walleye are the prized catch of Sparrow Lake. These golden-eyed predators average 2-3 pounds but can top 10. They hang out near bottom structure like rock piles and weed edges, usually in 15-30 feet. Dawn and dusk are prime time, especially in spring and fall. Walleye put up a good fight and are considered the best-eating freshwater fish around. To tempt a big one, try slow-trolling a bottom bouncer rig with a nightcrawler. Work those deeper holes and drop-offs. When you feel that telltale tap-tap, set the hook hard - walleye have tough mouths!
